People with disabilities are seven times more likely to experience sexual violence, yet athletes with disabilities are often excluded from sport-based prevention. Adaptive Sports Abuse Prevention (ASAP) is one of the few curricula geared toward the unique realities of coaching disabled athletes. Developed by abuse prevention experts and adaptive sports athletes, ASAP gives coaches, volunteers, and leaders the skills to recognize and interrupt potentially abusive situations. This session will address the ways that ableism in sports impacts the safety of disabled athletes and give participants a chance to experience the interactive activities of ASAP, which include a ball game, a race, and a physical challenge accessible to all bodies.
