Transgender and nonbinary people have long experienced barriers to accessing services. The past several years have added new layers of hardship for trans communities and loved ones. The current socio-political climate has not only ramped up historic modes of harm but has also been attempting to legislate trans people out of existence – or at least create nearly insurmountable barriers to accessing health and mental health care, victim services, and other basic support systems. This workshop will explore the profound impact of state-sanctioned hate – expressed through legislation, social media, news, political trends, and more – on trans/nonbinary individuals and communities. Attendees will leave with practical ideas of victim service providers, allied professionals, advocates, and others can each play a role in mitigating the damages and improve trans people’s lives.
